Italian Rail Service – Landslide Causing Disruption

Please be advised that a landslide occurred yesterday near the Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland causing disruption to our Italian rail container service.

Regrettably up to 150 metres of debris came tumbling down the hillside towards the rail installations. Geologists have advised that the rail infrastructure has suffered serious damage and the cliff face would probably have to be dynamited as more rocks threaten to come crashing down, consequently repair work to the electric line, tracks and retaining wall will only commence once it is deemed safe to do so.

The rail operators are now seeking alternative routes as this track is likely to be disrupted for several days, therefore delays are expected due to the amount of trains that have to be re-routed or that are currently affected by the landslide.
